the value of visiting local campus
St Joseph’s Student Experiences!
S5 pupils from St Joseph’s College in Dumfries have recently visited their local university campus to find out more about Higher Education.
During the visit both groups were given a study skills presentation from Dave Edwards, the Effective Learning Adviser on the campus. This was intended to provide students with revision tips and to help prepare them for their forthcoming exams. Students also took a tour of the campus facilities, including the newly completed mock hospital ward used for training Bell College students and a visit to the IT labs in the Rutherford McCowan building, where they sampled some of the computing games constructed by local University of Paisley computing students.
Before leaving the campus, Andrea Muir CUSA & Schools Liaison Officer at the campus, took the chance to remind the pupils about the Crichton: University Scholarship Agreement (CUSA), which entitles local school leavers to £200 per year if they study at the campus once they leave school. She also informed the students about the opportunity to enroll on the campus Summer School, which offers school leavers and adults thinking about entering Higher Education the opportunity to explore some of the subjects available locally from the University of Glasgow and University of Paisley in a free 5-week course during June and July.
Andrea Muir, who hosted both visits said: “When secondary school pupils visit the campus they are usually impressed with the local facilities. Although these events provide a great opportunity for us to inform students about the campus, I think the students also benefit from speaking to University of Glasgow and University of Paisley students – this gives them the chance to ask about the degree programmes and their experience of being a student on the campus”
Greg Millar, Principal Teacher Pastoral Care from St Joseph’s College, accompanied the students on their visit to the campus and said: “This was a very worthwhile experience for our students and the study skills session was invaluable leading up to exams.”
