Personal Support and Counselling

There are some personal issues you may encounter as a student which could affect your ability to study, such as stress, anxiety or depression.
All advisers are able to offer personal support and guidance, however a confidential counselling service is available on campus to help students who require this support.

Special Needs

Early contact with the Student Advisory Service is vital to ensure that you make an informed choice about the resources available to meet your particular needs.

Our Adviser works with students to assess particular requirements such as physical, educational or sensory impairment and to help to ensure that students have access to the support they need from a wide range of options.

Confidentiality

The Student Advisory Service operates a policy of confidentiality. A copy of the Confidentiality Statement is displayed in the SAS office and copies are available on request.

Advice for Parents

Questions Parents Ask
1. Where can my son/daughter get help with their finances?

The Welfare Adviser at the Student Advisory Service can discuss the full range of support available on an individual basis before entry to the course or during their time as a student on the campus. The Welfare Adviser can also give general information on Student Loans and Bursaries to parents. You can contact the Welfare Adviser on 01387 702066.

2. What will happen if my son/daughter falls ill or experiences a personal problem?

All new students are required to register with a local GP, students living in the Hall of Residence will be provided with a form and information about a local practice. The student should contact their Adviser of Studies to ensure that any medical or compassionate absence is recorded. The Student Counsellor is available at the Student Advisory Service to available to provide help to anyone with a personal problem.

3. What happens if my son/daughter has difficulty with their chosen subjects?

All students are assigned to an Adviser of Studies whose task it is to provide guidance with course choices and academic support. The Effective Learning Adviser at the Student Advisory Service provides students with the relevant techniques for time management, writing skills and exam preparation and are available for one-to-one advice sessions, lectures and workshops. 4. Will my son/daughter feel safe in Dumfries?

Dumfries is a small country town with a real sense of community. Many students studying at the Crichton Campus live at home in the region and are there to help newcomers feel welcome. Advice is available to students on personal safety matters. Students living in residence or rented accommodation are recommended to take out contents insurance.
